Operating Principle of Transfer Tunnel

·         Prior to heavy rainstorms, the water stored in Kowloon Byewash Reservoir will be conveyed to Lower Shing Mun Reservoir in advance to provide an approximately 350,000m3 flood storage space in Kowloon Byewash Reservoir. This storage capacity allows for collection of surface runoff in Kowloon Byewash Reservoir during heavy rainstorms and reduces the chance of overflow entering the urban areas.

·         A real-time monitoring system is provided at the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir to ensure there is sufficient storage capacity to collect the raw water from the Kowloon Byewash Reservoir.

·         An automatic water gate system is provided at the intake structure of Kowloon Byewash Reservoir to closely control the flow through the tunnel based on the water level at Lower Shing Mun Reservoir.
