Operating Principle of Penstock

During the operation of the inter-reservoirs transfer tunnel, the penstock at the intake structure would automatically open or close based on the real-time water level of the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir and the condition of the Plover Cove Tunnel, in order to control the flow of water transferred from the Kowloon Byewash Reservoir to the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir:

·         If the Plover Cove Tunnel is in operation, the penstock will automatically close to prevent a reduction in the storage capacity of the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir to receive water from the Plover Cove Reservoir.

·         When the water level of the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir falls below the pre-set value and the Plover Cove Tunnel is closed, the penstock will automatically open, allowing raw water to be transferred from the Kowloon Byewash Reservoir to the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir.

·         When the water level of the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir exceeds the pre-set value, the penstock will automatically close to minimize the risk of overflow from the Lower Shing Mun Reservoir.
