19 June 2014
A Topping-out ceremony for the new Main Pumping Station (MPS2) at Stonecutter Island Sewage Treatment Works (SCISTW) was held on 19 June 2014 to celebrate another important milestone of Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A (HATS 2A). The ceremony was officiated by Mr. Daniel Chung Kum-wah JP, Director of Drainage Services, Mr. Chan Pak-keung, Assistant Director of Sewage Services, Mr. Norman Siu Ka-kam, Assistant Director of Electrical & Mechanical, Mr. Jeremy Mark Sparrow, Chief Resident Engineer of Ove Arup & Partners Hong Kong Limited (Arup), Mr. Fergal Whyte, Director of Arup, Mr. Patrick Lee and Mr. John Ma, Director of Sun Fook Kong-Biwater Joint Venture (SBJV). The new pumping station is a core facility of HATS 2A that lifts sewage from the deep tunnels to the ground surface at Stoncecutters Island for chemically enhanced primary treatment, and the sewage will undergo disinfection before discharging to the western side of the Victoria Harbour. The new pumping station is a circular structure of about 55m in diameter and about 40m below ground. The structure can withstand enormous ground pressure and creates a cavernous space to house 8 sewage pumps. The MPS2 also provides a home for the new control system which integrates the existing treatment facilities under HATS 1 with the new facilities constructed under HATS 2A into a central control system. |
