Our Core Responsibilities

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) is committed to providing professional sewage treatment and stormwater drainage services to the public so as to protect the quality of Hong Kong waters and protect the citizens against flooding. Since our establishment in 1989, we have been endeavouring to build excellent sewerage and drainage facilities to make Hong Kong a more livable city.

Overview of Flood Prevention in 2017-18

  • Inspected over 2,290 kilometres of drains and rivers
  • Removed the flooding blackspot at Tung Tsz Road in Tai Po
  • Currently planning and formulating the drainage improvement works for West Kowloon, East Kowloon, Shatin, Sai Kung, Tai Po and Northern Hong Kong Island
  • Currently reviewing the DMPs for Lantau and Outlying Islands, Repulse Bay and Tai Tam, Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Tsing

Overview of Sewage Treatment and Sewerage System in 2017-18

  • Treatment of about 2.8 million cubic metres of sewage on average every day and 1,007 million cubic metres of sewage in total in the year
  • Total length of sewerage network 1,770 (kilometres)
  • Coverage of public sewerage 93.5% (Population percentage)
  • About 380,000 tonnes of sludge collected and treated in the year
  • A total of 314 DSD owned sewage treatment facilities

Planning, Design and Construction of New Drainage Facilities

Upstream and midstream improvement works of Kai Tak River are scheduled for completion in mid-2018

Detailed design for the revitalisation of Tsui Ping River has already begun in December 2017. The stage two public engagement exercise will be conducted from May to July 2018

Carried out the first stage of replacement of two large penstocks in March 2018 which involved a detailed survey and partial dismantling of the two existing penstocks located at 34 metres below ground level inside the Main Pumping Station No.1 of the Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works.

Upgrading of Mui Wo Sewage Treatment Works will be substantially completed in April 2018

Mui Wo Sewage Treatment Works

Relocation of Shatin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns site investigation works and design are currently underway. We are seeking funding approval from the Legislative Council for the site preparation and access tunnel under Stage 1 Contract, which are scheduled for commencement in 2019

Relocation of Shatin Sewage Treatment Works to Caverns

Laid public sewerage for over 220 villages as at March 2018

Rehabilitated storm drains and sewers with a total length of about 18 kilometres, at a cost of about $166 million
