Enhancement Works for Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station

To cater for future development of East Kowloon, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is carrying out enhancement works at the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station (KTSPS), which is situated near Kwun Tong Bypass and Wai Yip Street. The enhancement works commenced in late 2017 and are scheduled for completion in end 2022. This newsletter provides the latest information on the progress of construction and related information of the project.

We Understand Your Concerns

Are We Going to Detect Any Smell from The Sewage When We Are Playing in The Park?

We understand that people would not want to be affected by odours when playing in the park. Therefore, the Drainage Services Department and the project team have adopted various odour control systems to eliminate odours.

The 16,000 m³ underground balancing tank is equipped with a chemical odour control system. Chemical will be added into the tank to reduce the odours generated during the retention period. Treated sewage will only be stored temporarily during extreme peak flow and will be pumped away during off-peak hours. Besides, the rooftop can form an effective barrier covering the entire tank to shield odours. We also used the ‘Bio-trickling Filter System’ and ‘Activated Carbon Filter’ to effectively eliminated 99.8% ~ 99.9% of the odours. Therefore, under normal circumstances, the public will not be affected by any odours.

To ensure there will not be accidental leakage of odour, we will install an additional set of ‘Activated Carbon Filter’ at the gas exhaustion outlet of the pumping station. The outlets will be facing the Victoria Harbour and Kwun Tong bypass to minimize the impacts on nearby residents and the public.

If you would like to know more about the ‘Bio-trickling Filter System’ and ‘Activated Carbon Filter’, please stay tuned with our next newsletter!
