Enhancement Works for Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station

To cater for future development of East Kowloon, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is carrying out enhancement works at the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station (KTSPS), which is situated near Kwun Tong Bypass and Wai Yip Street. The enhancement works commenced in late 2017 and are scheduled for completion in end 2022. This newsletter provides the latest information on the progress of construction and related information of the project.

The Director is at the Forefront

We Listern to Your Concern

Our last newsletter briefly shared how we ensure odour from sewage will not affect landscaped deck users. We will now explain how the deodorization system works. The deodorization system mainly treats hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is the source of odour that gives rotten egg smells.

When sewage are pumped from the Kwun Tong Preliminary Treatment Work through underground pipelines to the balancing tank of the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station, chemicals (such as calcium nitrate) would be added to eliminate the odour through chemical reactions with the H2S. Since our sewage treatment facilities are fully enclosed and covered by the landscaped deck, these layers of physical barriers can also effectively prevent odour from diffusing to the park.

In addition, the gas remained at the balancing tank will be transmitted to the biotrickling filter tank. The microorganisms stored in the biotrickling filter tank will absorb H2S for biodegradation and reduce the concentration of the odour. To ensure the performance of the biotrickling filter, we will regularly supply water and nutrients to maintain a suitable environment for the microorganism to grow.

Lastly, the treated gas will pass through three numbers of activated carbon filters which will absorb the residual H2S and odour. The gas outlet will also be orientated towards the Kwun Tong Bypass such that traffic flow can help dispersing the emission.

After multiple treatments, the discharged gas will have no difference with normal gas. Park users are assured that they will not be irritated while enjoying the park facilities!
