Enhancement Works for Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station
To allow for future development of East Kowloon, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is implementing enhancement works to the Kwun Tong Sewage Pumping Station (KTSPS), which is situated near Kwun Tong Bypass and Wai Yip Street. Works have commenced in late 2017 and are scheduled for completion in end 2022. This newsletter provides the latest information on the progress of construction and related information of the project.
About the Project
To cope with anticipated increase in sewage flows due to future development, there is a need to upgrade the existing KTSPS. DSD is constructing an underground balancing facility with a storage capacity of 16,000m³. The facility will serve to improve operation robustness of the KTSPS as well as the adjacent Kwun Tong Preliminary Treatment Works (KTPTW). As part of the project, the KTSPS will be fully enclosed.
To maximize the beneficial use of space, the roof of the enclosure structure will be transformed into a fully landscaped green area. Furthermore, the area will be opened to the public for amenity and enjoyment as a roof garden.
Design Concept of the Roof Garden
The roof garden is designed with the concept of ‘Dancing Ribbons’. The use of curvilinear lines brings vitality and dynamic visual effects.
Picnic Area
This area will provide a green and comfortable platform for people to enjoy quality time with their family and friends.
Elderly Fitness Corner
The roof garden will provide elderly fitness facilities to help promote physical fitness of the elderly and a healthy lifestyle.
Children’s Play Area
The design of the play equipment aims at bringing happiness to children while helping them to learn different skills for balanced development.
Engaging our Neighbours
The project team of DSD, the engineering consultants and the contractor introduced the latest progress of the project to Kwun Tong District Council members Mr. Tang Wing-chun and Mr. Chan Wah-yu, Nelson in July, and listened to their views.
Works Progress
Foundation works are in progress. The photo shows the fabrication of reinforcement cage for bored piles.
