Sham Shui Po has always been the place for local fashionistas and design enthusiasts. Thanks to its captivating streetscape, Sham Shui Po has become a source of inspiration for the futuristic aesthetics in cyberpunk films. In October 2020, the Drainage Services Department (DSD) was invited to participate in the "Heart of Cyberpunk – Immersive Fashion Experience" event and provided the external wall of Sham Shui Po No.1&2 Sewage Screening Plant for mural painting, with a view to integrating art into the community and showcasing local authentic culture of Sham Shui Po.
"Heart of Cyberpunk" was organized under the 3-year creative tourism project “Design District Hong Kong”(#ddHK), which is jointly launched by the Tourism Commission, the Hong Kong Design Centre and the Hong Kong Comics & Animation federation in 2018. In collaboration with local shops, HK-based fashion designer units and many other creatives, the event pulled together fashion and multidisciplinary designs and arts to put on stage a genre-defying immersive fashion experience in which locals and visitors were exposed to an unique cyberpunk culture and scenery only available in Sham Shui Po.
Design Concept of Mural Painting
The mural is created by Taka, a Japanese artist currently based in Hong Kong. Echoing to the "Heart of Cyberpunk" event, the piece of mural artwork is "Solarpunk"-themed, which fits in well with our sewage screening plan in Sham Shui Po. The mural is inspired by the difficulties faced by human and society due to climate crisis, rapidly developing technology, as well as the conflict between old and new, East and West. It also descripts a beautiful vision of the harmonic integration of humans with advance technology, Artificial Intelligent and nature.
The cyborg girl depicted in the work is inspired by the red and black traditional Chinese masks of Xiqu. The red color symbolizes loyalty and bravery.
