Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS), Stage I

Aim : Improve water quality in Victoria Harbour by collecting 70% of sewage generated from urban areas around Victoria Harbour for centralized treatment Scope: Construct a 23.6 km deep tunnel system, a sewage treatment works (STW) at Stonecutters Island and a 1.7-km submarine outfall Services area: Kowloon peninsula, Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi, Tseung Kwan O, Shau Kei Wan and Chai Wan Progress: The Stonecutters Islands STW and the outfall completed and in operation since May 1997 and July 1999 respectively. The Stage I works have been fully commissioned in Dec 2001 and the system is now treating 1.3 million cu. m. of sewage everyday

Construction of public sewerage facilities for another 27 unsewered areas is in progress

Outlying Islands SMP

Aim : Collect sewage generated on Lantau Island, Lamma Island, Peng Chau and Cheung Chau for proper treatment and disposal Scope: Construct and improve about 20 km of sewers, 4 pumping stations, 7 sewage treatment plants and 4 outfalls on Outlying Islands under Stage 1 works Services area: Lantau Island, Lamma Island, Peng Chau and Cheung Chau Progress: For Lantau Island, the upgrading works at Mui Wo sewage treatment plant were completed in May 2000 and the upgrading works at Siu Ho Wan sewage treatment plant commenced in Mid 2001. The sewerage works for Ngong Ping are at the EIA study and investigation/design stage. The construction works will commence in end 2003. The upgrading works at Cheung Chau sewage treatment plant commenced in Sep 2000. The sewerage works for Peng Chau will commence in end 2002. The review on Stage 2 works has just been completed

Port Shelter SMP

Aim : Improve water quality within the Port Shelter water control zone Scope: Construct about 64 km of sewers, 23 pumping stations and 12 km of rising mains to collect sewage from 17 unsewered areas in the Port Shelter catchment Services area: Sai Kung, Pak Sha Wan and Silverstrand Progress: Stage 1 works and part of Stage 2 works were completed, covering about 13 km of sewers, 6 pumping stations and 2 km of rising mains. Design of Stage 2 remaining works and Stage 3 works is in progress

North District SMP

Aim : Provide sewerage facilities to unsewered areas in North District and improve the sewerage system to meet development needs Scope: Upgrade capacity and treatment level of Shek Wu Hui STW and construct 16 km of trunk sewers, 25 pumping stations and provide public sewers to 74 villages in North District Services area: North District Progress: Upgrading Shek Wu Hui STW was completed. About 3 km of trunk sewers along Sha Tau Kok Road were completed. About 0.6 km of trunk sewers and 2 pumping stations along Castle Peak Road were completed. Construction of sewers for 4 unsewered areas is in progress

Yuen Long & Kam Tin SMP

Aim : Improve water quality in Deep Bay and local watercourses and provide new sewerage facilities to meet developments needs Scope: Improve about 7 km of sewers in Yuen Long Town, construct 3 km of flow diversion sewer from Yuen Long STP to San Wai STP, construct about 50 km of trunk sewers and provide public sewerage system to 43 unsewered villages in NWNT, and expand the existing San Wai STP Services area: NWNT Progress: Improvement to Yuen Long Town sewers and flow diversion sewer completed. Construction works for the trunk sewers in the Yuen Long East started in July 2001 while that in the Yuen Long south will start in end 2002. Design of the remaining works is in progress

Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau and Pokfulam SMP

Aim : Improve the sewerage system in Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau and Pok Fu Lam to meet development needs Scope: Upgrade the existing Aberdeen Sewage Screening Plant, construct 3.4 km of trunk sewers from Wong Chuk Hang to the plant, improve 15.5 km of branch sewers, and rectify the expedient connections in the areas Services area: Aberdeen, Ap Lei Chau and Pok Fu Lam Progress: Installation of trunk sewer by pipe jacking method was completed. Construction of branch sewers and pumping station is in progress. Detailed design of Stage 2 works is in progress

Aim : Improve the sewerage system in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi and to provide a new sewerage system in Ting Kau, Sham Tseng and Tsing Lung Tau to meet development needs Scope: Construct and improve 14.2 km of sewers, an industrial wastewater pumping station, and rectify expedient connections in the industrial areas in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi; construct a sewage treatment plant, a submarine outfall, 8 km of trunk sewers and 7 km of branch sewers to villages in Ting Kau, Sham Tseng and Tsing Lung Tau Services area: Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung, Tsing Yi, Ting Kau, Sham Tseng and Tsing Lung Tau Progress: Sewer improvement, industrial wastewater pumping station and rectification of expedient connections in industrial areas in Tsuen Wan, Kwai Chung and Tsing Yi completed. Reclamation for Sham Tseng sewage treatment plant, and construction of 2 km of trunk sewers and 3.5 km of branch sewers were completed. Construction of the Sham Tseng sewage treatment plant commenced in mid 2001

Design of Stage 2 works started in end 2001
