Yuen Long Bypass Floodway cum Eco-tour

It is DSD’s vision to provide world-class stormwater drainage services enabling the sustainable development of Hong Kong.  Along this line, it is our policy to take into account ecology and environment protection needs together with drainage needs in designing, constructing and maintaining our drainage facilities.  Environmental friendly features are incorporated into DSD’s drainage improvement and flood control projects as far as possible.

The ecological enhancement work of Yuen Long Bypass Floodway Project is a good example on how DSD addressed ecological needs in implementing drainage improvement projects.  Enhancement of existing channels have also be carried out where situation permits.

Highlights

Yuen Long Bypass Floodway (YLBF)
  • YLBF is constructed to mitigate flooding in Yuen Long Town and its peripheral village areas.  Yuen Long Bypass Floodway is a main drainage channel built at the South of Yuen Long Town to intercept 40% of the runoff in the Yuen Long catchment.
  • This engineering solution can avoid major works in Yuen Long Town, thus there is no serious disturbance to the traffic and living of Yuen Long residents, and is cost-effective too.
  • YLBF mainly comprises:
    1. 3.8 km long main drainage channel from Sham Chung Tsuen to Kam Tin River;
    2. An inflatable dam and a low flow pumping station at the downstream end of the bypass floodway;
    3. 18 box-culverts;
    4. Roads with associated drainage and water works along the bypass floodway;
    5. 7 hectares engineered wetland; and
    6. Landscaping work with about 700,000 no. of plants.
  • Project Cost: about HK$ 470M
  • Catchment Area: 18.7 km2

YLBF - Engineered Wetland
  • A 7 hectares engineered wetland was constructed near the downstream;
  • 13,000 trees, 140,000 shrubs and 550,000 herbaceous plants has been planted along YLBF and in the engineered wetland
  • The engineered wetland mainly consists:
    1. 3 main water ponds
    2. A seasonal shallow pond
    3. A permanent shallow pond
    4. A deep water pond
    5. Crushed brick & oyster shell ponds
    6. Reed beds
  • Continuous monitoring has shown great biodiversity within the engineered wetland with over 130 plant species and various species of birds, frogs, insects and bats.

Eco-Tour at Nam San Wai

Shan Pui River and Kam Tin River at Nam San Wai are two major rivers for conveyance of stormwater runoff from the basin of Yuen Long, Kam Tin and Ngau Tam Mei to Deep Bay.  The two rivers meet at Nam San Wai where is now a popular bird-watching spot.
