Welcome to the Project Homepage of the Tsuen Wan Drainage Tunnel project.

The mission of the Drainage Services Department (DSD) is to provide world-class wastewater and stormwater drainage services to enable the sustainable development of Hong Kong.

DSD is implementing drainage improvement works in the Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung districts - the Tsuen Wan Drainage Tunnel. This Project aims at reducing the risk of flooding in Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung districts.

For this project, DSD has adopted the innovative strategy of intercepting excess stormwater from the upland catchments for discharge into the sea. This strategy will directly relieve the risk of flooding in the urban areas by intercepting excessive flood water in the upstream.

In addition to minimizing the risk of flooding in the urban areas, this strategy will also reduce disturbance of the project to the public. As construction works will be centered in the upland areas, no extensive pipe laying / upgrading works in busy streets and temporary traffic arrangement is needed. Also, as the works areas are mainly located in rural areas, disturbance to the residents shall be essentially avoided. Finally, in the preliminary design stage of the project, we had already completed the environmental assessments for the successful implementation of environmental mitigation measures to minimize disturbance to the public and the environment.

This Project commenced on 28 December 2007, and completion is anticipated in 2013. The construction cost is around $1,123 million. Please refer to the drawing below for the proposed tunnel alignment.

We hope and trust that this webpage will provide you with the project details and up-to-date progress on this Project.
