11 November 2015

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) launched the two-day Research & Development Forum 2015 today (November 11). With the theme of "Wastewater Management", the first-day session invited leading industry practitioners and renowned experts to deliver keynote speeches. It attracted some 300 local academics, professionals and industry representatives, and helped promote collaboration and innovative technologies effectively.

In his welcome speech at the forum, the Director of Drainage Services, Mr Edwin Tong, said that the DSD has been attaching great importance to research and development and has actively collaborated with the industries in pursuit of innovative sewage and sludge treatment technologies.

"This is the 10th consecutive year that we have organised the Research & Development Forum. It provides a platform for the stakeholders to present their ideas and exchange views as well as learn about the latest technologies and explore opportunities for collaboration, thereby creating a better and sustainable living environment," he said.

Another keynote speaker, the Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Ms Anissa Wong, said that the DSD has been working relentlessly in the research and development of sewage and sludge treatment technologies, in particular the application of waste-to-energy technology that generates heat and electricity for the operation of sewage treatment works and helps reduce carbon footprints.

At the forum today, Associate Professor of the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Hong Kong Dr Zhang Tong; the Vice-President for Research and Graduate Studies of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Joseph Lee; the Chair Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Professor Zhao Tianshou; the Director of AECOM Asia Company Limited, Ms Echo Leong; and Assistant Professor of the School of Energy and Environment of the City University of Hong Kong Dr Patrick Lee shared their research findings and experiences in relation to the Harbour Area Treatment Scheme as well as sludge treatment and relevant infrastructure.
