Contract awarded for ultraviolet disinfection works for sewage treatment (11/6/2008)

6 November 2008

The Drainage Services Department (DSD) today (June 11) awarded a contract for the ultraviolet disinfection works for Sha Tin Sewage Treatment Works and Tai Po Sewage Treatment Works (STW).

The works, at a cost of $124 million, are expected to be completed in December 2009.

The high quality treated effluent from Sha Tin and Tai Po STWs is currently discharged via the Tolo Harbour Effluent Export Scheme into Kai Tak Nullah.  Upon completion of the ultraviolet disinfection works for the two STWs, the water quality at Kai Tak Nullah will be further improved through reduction of the E. Coli level in the treated effluent.

In parallel, the department is expanding Sha Tin and Tai Po STWs to cope with the developments in Sha Tin, Ma On Shan and Tai Po.  The treatment capacity of Sha Tin STW and Tai Po STW will be expanded to 340,000 cubic metres per day and 120,000 cubic metres per day respectively.

Ends/Wednesday, June 11, 2008
